Noosa Coastal Hinterland

Tucked behind the beautiful coastal strip is the Noosa Coastal Hinterland; sit a collage of tranquil lakes, lush forests and pastures, guarded by striking volcanic formations that offer stunning mountain-top vistas of the hinterland and coast beyond. Definitely a landscape that invites exploration!

Things to do

Situated behind the ocean dunes is Lake Weyba. Drift along the lake and everglade-style creeks by kayak, often reflecting amazing mirror images of the tree canopy and sky above. The hinterland opens a realm of possibilities for visitors and is an ideal spot for, photography, nature and bird watching or swimming.
The lush valleys of the Noosa Coastal Hinterland are dotted with cafes, galleries, farm gates and boutique vineyards. Call in to the renowned Eumundi markets, visit makers of fine French nougat, or pamper yourself at a Balinese-style day spa on your hinterland excursion. Maybe Share 9 holes of golf with a mob of kangaroos!

The mystifying volcanic shape of Mt Tinbeerwah towers over Noosa’s coast and hinterland with its mountain-top lookout, walking and bike trails, and its sheer rock faces; and for the more adventurous it is an abseiling and rock climbing paradise.

Explore the Lake Weyba Sections of the Noosa National Park. In spring the wildflowers of the coastal heathlands put on a spectacular show, covering the landscape with their kaleidoscope of blooms.

Noosa's Beaches

Noosa beaches from Coolum to North Shore are well known all over the world, renowned for their beauty and cleanliness. The beach is central to Noosa's year-round holiday vibe and a focal point for the region's community and events.

Noosa is home to one of Australia's only north-facing beaches. Main Beach is popular for its year-round gentle waves and safe swimming ideal younger family members. Learn-to-surf schools choose the protected waters along the beach and local fishing enthusiasts cast their lines near the mouth of the Noosa River.

Noosa National Park is a popular place with swimmers and surfers, who trek by foot to the many bays and coves of the rocky headland. Further around the headland, Alexandria Bay is a beautiful, quiet sandy beach accessible only by foot through the Noosa National Park. All beaches and coves in the National Park are unpatrolled and swimming should be approached with caution. You are better to be protected then take the risk remember the safest place to swim in the ocean is always between the red and yellow flags. Council Lifeguards and volunteer surf life savers patrol at Sunshine Beach, Peregian Beach, Coolum Beach and Noosa Main Beach. NO FLAGS = NO SWIM. And please never swim or surf alone.

Coolum has kilometres of beautiful beaches – there’s safe, patrolled swimming at the main surf beach or take the time to explore peaceful bays. Try a beach surf lesson or hire a surfboard, boogie board or stand-up paddle board.

Catch a wave

Sunshine Beach, which extends 15 kilometres south from the Noosa headland, is renowned for its beach breaks and catches most of the southerly swells heading up the coast.

Local surfers in Noosa favour spots around the headland of the National Park, but they know that in certain conditions the waves tend to get larger and unsuitable for inexperienced surfers. First Point has a perfect long-board break that, on a small to medium sized swell, dishes up long, peeling waves. Further round the Noosa headland, the National Park offers a variety of protected coves known for great surfing in the right conditions.

Those learning to surf are encouraged to find a good surf school, most of which operate on Main Beach between the rock groynes. Coolum Beach is home to champion surfers and offers beach and point breaks, and quiet bays for surfing in most conditions.

Noosa Lakes

Lake Macdonald, a quiet haven located close to the township of Cooroy, is also a popular place for a picnic or a paddle and to see the resident wildlife. Fishing enthusiasts (please ensure you are armed with a permit and knowledge of fish and size limits) catch Bass, Perch and more in its waters.

Motorboats and swimming are not permitted, so hire a canoe or kayak and grab a map of paddle trails that will help you to navigate to lakeside parks, the Noosa Botanic Gardens, and fishing platforms and creeks.

Lake Macdonald is also a popular destination with ‘twitchers’ who come hoping to see over 100 species of local birds. Fearnley Bird Hide, on the shore of the lake, is part of the Noosa Bird Trail.

The Noosa River system links three lakes, extending south to Lake Weyba and north to Lake Cooroibah and Lake Cootharaba. Located close to Peregian Beach, Lake Weyba is a large shallow lake. A great way to explore Lake Weyba is to paddle a canoe through Weyba Creek from the centre of Noosa. Or why not retreat to a cosy lakeside cottage for a romantic getaway.

Hire a canoe or kayak and explore the expansive waters of Lake Cootharaba, a large lake that is about 10 kilometres long and 5 kilometres wide with an average depth of about 1.5 metres. Harry’s Hut is a popular campground reached by 4WD or by traversing the upper reaches of the Noosa River, north of Lake Cootharaba. Nearby Lake Cooroibah is the smaller of the two lakes and is ringed by mangroves, tidal flats and eucalyptus forest.
